Abstract

This paper aims to deliberate the concept of monotheism in religious discourse. In general, monotheism refers to the worship of one God. This belief can be traced in a number of world religions such as Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hindu, Sikh and Bahai which claim the unity of God. Nevertheless, in monotheistic religious discourse, the concept of monotheism leads to exclusivism and pluralism in religious belief which cause different connotations of monotheism. Some scholars argue monotheism inflicts animosity between people of faith due to the single truth claim and rejection of other religious truth. In addressing the issue of exclusivism, some propose pluralism as a solution to the problem. Whereas, Islam rejects pluralism and adheres to the paradigm of Tauhid that affirms the oneness of God. In sum, although Tauhid in Islam resembles exclusivist approach that rejects other religious faith, it does not however promote animosity among religious faith. Thus, a precise understanding of Tauhid in Islam must be preserved from any misunderstandings.
